Anirban Basu
Professor and Director, UW Department of Pharmacy, Comparative Health Outcomes, Policy, and Economics (CHOICE) Institute
Anirban Basu is a statistician and professor of health economics. He is the Stergachis Family Endowed Director in the Comparative Health Outcomes, Policy, and Economics (CHOICE) Institute in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Washington, where he holds joint appointments with the departments of health services and economics. He is also a research associate at the U.S. National Bureau of Economic Research, and an elected fellow of the American Statistical Association.
Basu’s work sits at the intersection of microeconomics, statistics and health policy. His research focuses on understanding the economic value of health care, generating causal evidence, and most recently, on the potential for discrimination with machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms. His research has appeared in some of the leading journals in health economics, statistics, health services research and policy, and clinical sciences.
Basu earned his master's degree in biostatistics from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and a Ph.D. in public policy studies from the University of Chicago, where he remained as a faculty member from 2004 to 2010. See Basu’s full profile.
