Meet the Instructor
Christy Karras
Christy Karras specializes in editing book-length manuscripts, especially historical and genre fiction. She does a fair amount of copyediting and some proofreading, but her forte is line editing, where she can really get her editing hands dirty as she cleans up other people's sentences.
As the author or coauthor of seven travel and history books, Christy has seen the publishing world from both sides and knows what it's like to be on the receiving end of edits — a valuable lesson! She has been a magazine and website editor, including a stint as the assistant editor for Yahoo Travel. She was managing editor for a print and digital health and wellness magazine for Sam's Club and helped launch a quarterly lifestyle magazine.
Christy has written for clients ranging from Alaska Beyond to the London Sunday Times. She is a regular contributor to the Seattle Times, where she writes about travel, culture and the arts. Previously she was a features staff writer and critic for the Salt Lake Tribune and a general-assignment reporter for the Associated Press.
Her life has been more interesting than she ever intended. Christy was a White House intern, has won money on two game shows and met the Queen of England in a scene later portrayed in the movie The Queen (the filmmakers did not consult her).
An instructor for UW Professional & Continuing Education's Certificate in Editing and Proofreading Essentials course, she was awarded a Legacy Award for 5 Years of Instructional Excellence in 2022.
